Debelah (pronounced Deb-a-lah) Morgan was born September 29, 1977, in Detroit, Michigan. The daughter of an Indian mother and an African-American father, Debelah was introduced to the piano at age 3.
She attended a kindergarten piano class and moved up to Sunday school, but it was when she heard gospel singers at the age of 8 that she knew she was destined to be a singer as well.
She went straight to work, composing songs and learning how to sing in different languages (she can now sing in French, Italian, German, Hindi, and Portuguese). The Morgan family moved from Motown to Arizona, where Debelah got involved in high school by organizing a female gospel church choir. Not only gifted with singing abilities, Debelah entered some beauty pageants and was crowned Miss Teen Black Arizona and Miss Black Teenage World, at the age of 15.
Debelah then went on to study at the University of Arizona, where she majored in Vocal Performance. Not long after graduation, Debelah was signed to Atlantic Records and saw the release of her self-titled debut album.
Released in 1994, Debelah was one of the few who even saw the album, as its small-scale release only took it to the US and Japan, and left no impression. With no remorse, Atlantic dropped the ambitious singer in the midst of her record deal. |
