"I guess I wasn't sure how people would respond to it (her album). Then I thought to myself, 'If you have to be something you're not, then why do it at all?'"
-Deana Carter
| Date of Birth: 4th of January, 1966 |
| Birthplace: Nashville, Tennessee |

 |
| Hot off of the Country charts with her four-times platinum Did I Shave My Legs For This?, Deana was asked to lend her voice to the soundtracks for Anastasia and Hope Floats. |
 |
| With her soulful voice and homegrown good looks, she should be on everyone's radar, but she hasn't quite received the same media coverage as her contemporaries. So here we are, yet again, giving credit where credit is due. |

Country music sensation Deana Carter was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on the 4th of January, 1966. The daughter of Fred Carter Jr., one of Nashville's most famed session guitarists from the late 50's to the late 70's, Carter grew up surrounded by musical talent. Fred Carter Jr. played with artists such as Elvis Presley, Simon & Garfunkel and Roy Orbison.
Before Carter's musical career took off, she decided to go to college to study rehabilitation therapy, a move that was influenced by seeing her grandmother suffer from a disabling illness.
Continuing what she loved to do, Carter combined her education and her passion for music by singing on campus at local hangouts. Although Carter began working with stroke and head-injury patients upon graduating from the University of Tennessee, she knew that music was her true calling and returned to it at age 23.
Song writing was not an easy task for Carter at first, only because she was aiming her standards very high, striving only for perfection. This could be considered her dad's "fault", since he always had extremely high standards in his own work. Once Carter allowed for her feelings and experiences to take over her song writing, the songs and ideas began flowing onto paper.
Before Carter's big break, she performed at local Nashville clubs while waiting tables, teaching preschool, and cleaning urinals in order to support herself. Considering the amount of famous musicians that were in her surroundings, Carter's own music career began relatively late.
It all changed for Carter when Willie Nelson (who also worked with her father) noticed one of Carter's demo tapes and was so impressed by her talent that he invited her to be the only female solo performer at the 1994 Farm Aid VII concert. It was this demo tape that led to the beginning of Carter's relationship with Capitol Records that same year. |
