Corinne Bailey was born on February 26th, 1979, in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Her mother is from Yorkshire, but her father is West Indian. She has two younger sisters. The Bailey household had little money for luxuries like trips or televisions, and the relationship between Corinne’s parents deteriorated during her childhood. Her parents finally divorced when she was fourteen. “I was relieved,” she later recalled, “because it took the tension out of the house.”
Meanwhile, Corinne had already found a creative outlet in music. She had studied classical violin in school and sang in her Baptist church choir. Once she was in her teens, her church’s youth leader offered to buy Corinne an electric guitar and introduced her to Radiohead and Led Zeppelin. Soon Corinne was emulating girl bands like Veruca Salt and L7 and with some friends she formed her own band called Helen.
Helen was quickly signed to Roadrunner Records, a heavy metal label, in 1995. But Corinne learned how precarious that achievement was. The deal fell through when Helen’s bassist became pregnant, which resulted in the disbanding of the group. Corinne was crushed and she put her musical ambitions on hold and decided to go back to school. She attended the University of Leeds and earned a degree in English Literature.
Just before her graduation, Corinne began thinking about music again. Not wanting to be pinned down, she took a number of odd jobs cleaning, waiting tables and working in retail. Eventually, she landed a job as a cloakroom attendant at a jazz club. Not only did she develop her talent singing there in the off-hours, but Corinne also met Jason Rae, a saxophonist, at the club. The two married in 2001 and Corinne changed her name to Corinne Bailey Rae. |
