| Monica and Gabriela Irimia are the Transylvanian twins who surprised everyone when their "Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)," a silly song written by their middle-aged mother, entered the UK singles chart at No. 2, and then went on to top the charts throughout Europe. |

| The Cheeky Girls have had the last laugh in their bid for fame and fortune. Despite having been laughed off as nothing more than a joke on Popstars: The Rivals -- twice -- the Romanian sisters' first single became a huge hit in the UK and Europe, selling almost a million copies. |

The Irimia twins were born on Halloween, October 31, 1982, in Cluj-Napoca, deep in the heart of Transylvania, Romania. Gabriela appeared first, followed 10 minutes later by sister Monica. Father Doru is a medical doctor, and songwriting mother Margit is a nurse and midwife.
The girls began their schooling at three, and also learned gymnastics between the young ages of three to five at a physical education institute. Swimming and karate soon replaced the girls' artistic gymnastics training, and by the time they reached seven, classical ballet had taken precedence over all other activities.
Around the same time, Gabriela and Monica began developing their musical side by frequenting the Hungarian Opera House in their hometown. Their mother emigrated to England in 1993, leaving the 10-year-old twins and their father in Romania. That September, they were accepted at the Octavian Strola High School of Choreography in Cluj.
The Irimia sisters' schooling ran up to 10 hours a day. The mornings were spent studying classical ballet, while the afternoon agenda focused on academics. An additional couple of hours of after-school lessons were devoted to music and singing, and further instruction in traditional Spanish, Russian, Hungarian, and Romanian dance, as well as contemporary dance. During the twins' final two years at the school, additional intensive ballet and dance lessons often made the days run as long as 13 hours. During these years, they frequently performed live at the Romanian and Hungarian Opera Houses as part of their course requirements.
When Monica and Gabriela were 16, their appearance together on a Romanian quiz show won them a two-week holiday at Dram Castle, where legend has it Count Dracula had resided. The pair graduated from choreography school in 2001, and soon relocated to Rye, East Sussex, England, reuniting with their mother, now known as "Margaret," and her English husband. |
