| Charlotte Gainsbourg is an actress and singer who has sung the title tracks on three of her movies. Charlotte Lucy Gainsbourg was born on July 21, 1971 in London, England, and was raised in Paris, France. As the daughter of French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and British actress, model and singer Jane Birkin, she grew up in an artistic and unconventional environment in which she naturally followed her parents down a creative path.
In 1984, at the age of 12, she landed her first role in a feature film playing the daughter of Catherine Deneuve in Paroles et musique. That same year, she sang a duet with her father on his album Love On The Beat. Entitled "Lemon Incest," the track's lyrics and its accompanying music video of Charlotte in bed with her father stirred up a fair bit of controversy.
Charlotte won a César Award, France's Oscar equivalent, as Most Promising Actress of 1986 for her performance in the coming-of-age drama L'effrontée. That same year, she costarred with her father in Charlotte for Ever, a film he wrote and directed. Charlotte released a similarly titled album of songs written and produced by papa Serge, issued on the Philips label.
In 1987 and 1988, Gainsbourg respectively appeared with mother Jane and half-sister Lou Doillon in Le Petit amour, and as her mother's daughter in the fantasy Jane B. par Agnès. The following year, she received a César nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of Janine Castang in La Petite voleuse, a drama set in post World War II, France.
She landed steady movie work through the 1990s, costarring alongside Kristin Scott Thomas and future husband Yvan Attal in 1990's Aux yeux du monde, and with Julian Sands in the Italian feature Il Sole anche di notte, also in 1990. |
