“I don't want anyone ever producing me unless I'm giving my soul to them. Like unless they're writing the songs and I love them so much and I want them to f*cking tell me what to do. But I'll never do that.”-- Cat Power

| Though she has released seven albums in a career spanning over 10 years, Chan is probably best known for her last two records, You Are Free and The Greatest -- the former of which featured guest appearances by Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl. |

| Cat Power singer and founder Chan (pronounced Shawn) Marshall has consistently and repeatedly demonstrated her abilities as both a singer and songwriter. Chan's refusal to deliver work that is anything other than challenging and thought provoking certainly sets her apart from the majority of her peers. |

Charlyn “Chan” Marie Marshall was born on January 21,1972 in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents divorced while she was still young, and Chan was sent to live with her mother. By the time she dropped out of high school at the age of 16, she chose to move in with her Atlanta-based father, a blues performer and pianist. Chan’s father instilled into his daughter a love and respect for music of all genres to the extent that, at the age of 19, Chan picked up a guitar and began the slow process of becoming a musician in her own right. After a short stint in a band, Chan came to the realization that she preferred songwriting to performing, and she moved to New York City to pursue her songwriting career in 1992.
Having adopted the stage name of Cat Power, which she reportedly got from a trucker cap reading “Cat Diesel Power,” Chan began the slow process of establishing herself as an original and relevant singer-songwriter. After working a series of gigs around the city and releasing a well-received single, 1994’s “Headlights,” Chan was invited to open for indie darling Liz Phair. Chan also performed alongside such obscure bands as God is My Co-Pilot and Two Dollar Guitar. It wasn’t long before she had a plethora of musicians urging her to record an album of her own. |
