| Deborah Harry was the original bleached blonde of '70s and '80s pop music. With her platinum hair and cutting-edge fashion style, Harry fronted Blondie, one of the biggest and best-known "New Wave" rock groups, with hits like "Call Me," "Heart Of Glass" and "The Tide Is High." She was also one of the first musicians to successfully blend rap and reggae with rock music. |
 |
| Her style, image and presence as the lead singer for the late '70s/early '80s band Blondie had a huge influence on many of the leading women in popular music today. Over her three-decade career, she has been in and out of the spotlight and has rarely taken time off. |

Born July 1, 1945, in Miami, Florida, Deborah Harry was adopted by the time she was three months old. The daughter of Richard and Catherine Harry, who both managed a family store, the family relocated to a suburb of Patterson, New Jersey. Harry began her musical career by singing in the church choir, overcoming her innate shyness.
She also spent her formative years hating school and craving the hustle and bustle of the big cities, often going to New York City on Saturdays and walking around Greenwich Village. Completing high school and attending university, Harry moved to New York in 1965. After landing in the Big Apple, she worked a series of odd jobs in and around New York, including stints as a secretary, a Play..boy bunny, and a waitress at Max's Kansas City.
Hanging around with Andy Warhol's clique and attending the original Woodstock fueled her artistic fires. Her first musical accomplishment was singing backup vocals for the Wind In The Willows, a bland folk group that released only one album. In 1973, Harry met guitarist Chris Stein. The duo meshed well and began performing around bars like CBGBs and Max's Kansas City as "The Stilletos." Changing their name to Blondie, the band created a loyal following in the punk rock circles of New York. By 1976, Blondie had its first record deal and Harry became the focal point for the band's image.
Harry led Blondie through a string of hit singles and albums, but by the band's sixth album in 1982, the spark sizzled. In 1981, Harry released her debut solo effort, Koo Koo, which virtually tanked commercially. But at the same time, more problems surfaced. Longtime companion Chris Stein was diagnosed with a rare and potentially fatal genetic disorder. After being at his side and tending to his health for four years, Stein recovered and Harry returned to the music business. In 1986, she released Rockbird and the single "French Kissing in the USA" topped the charts in Australia and the UK. During this time period, Harry appeared in small independent films or what could be classified as "B" movies. |
