"Before you worry about what genre it is, about whether it's a loop or a drum, it's about what suits the song. It's using what's within your reach, but also reaching for everything you can. I don't know if I always get it right, because I don't know every sound yet.”

| Beth Orton has a mysterious air about her that combines both fragility and strength. Naturally, we’re impressed by her vocal talents and musical instincts, but we think her willingness to go off in new artistic directions is even more admirable. |

Elizabeth Caroline Orton was born on December 14, 1970, in East Dereham, Norfolk, England. The English countryside where Beth lived until her teenage years was full of left-wing artists and activists, including Beth’s mother, who founded a summer arts program in addition to pushing a childcare reform bill through Parliament. Beth’s father, an architectural draftsman, died when she was 11, and when Beth was 14, she moved with her mother and brother to East London.
After the move, Beth became engrossed in music, thanks in part to her brother, who listened to nearly every genre at a deafening volume. By the end of her teens, however, Beth was drifting more toward acting. Shortly after her mother’s death, at the age of 19, Beth joined the experimental Tabard Theatre Company and traveled with that troupe as far off as Russia.
During her theater days in the early 1990s, Beth met British musician and producer William Orbit, who first hired Beth to do spoken word on his albums. Discovering that Beth could sing and write too, Orbit had her collaborate on the songs “Water from a Vine Leaf” and “Don’t Wanna Know About Evil.” Beth was soon featured on recordings by the band Red Snapper and sang “Alive Alone” for The Chemical Brothers’ album Exit Planet Dust.
Influenced by Orbit’s electronica, Beth released her first CD, Superpinkymandy (1993), but only in Japan. Some of the material was later reused on Trailer Park, her official UK and U.S. debut on Heavenly Records, which was released in 1996 to much acclaim. Thanks to it success, Beth was nominated for the Mercury Prize and two Brit Awards in 1997.
In 1999, Beth toured with Lilith Fair and released Central Reservation, which provided her first U.S. hit single, “Stolen Car,” and won her a 2000 Brit award for Best British Female. |
