Beth Gibbons was born January 4th, 1965, in Exeter, UK, and raised on a small farm twenty miles outside of town. In this case, the word "farm" doesn't apply to some pastoral paradise, but rather it refers to an actual functioning farm with crops and cattle.
Judging by her apparent frailty and carefully crafted prose, you would assume that young Beth sat in her room and read poems while her father and brothers broke their backs in the field. But, for a family with an absentee father and three daughters, there was little time for depression or the collected works of Sylvia Plath.
"We all had an enormous amount of work to do on the farm," recalls Beth in one of her early interviews. "Everyone had to roll up their sleeves; it wasn't really the time for moods."
Far from hating the hard labor of farm life, Beth embraced the hard work and the strong family ties that it forged. So much so that during her teenage years, when most of her friends were shuffling off to Exeter for a night on the town, Beth preferred to stay home with her mother and listen to records. The only thing besides music that would ever get Beth to leave the farm was a boyfriend during her early 20's, but after a few months of communal living, she decided that she couldn't leave the farm life behind.
Finally, at the age of 22, Beth, who had decided to forgo any sort of University experience, made up her mind to move to Bristol and take her chances as a singer. Though she wasn't expecting any sort of glamorous life in the seaside town, she did become a minor celebrity as the little girl with the big voice. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to keep her out of the unemployment line.
In a twist of fate that is quite the opposite of every person who has ever stood in line for the dole, Beth found her fame and fortune waiting for her at that government office. She found it in the form of future Portishead partner, Geoff Barrow. |
