Born in the Bronx and raised in Brooklyn, Angie Martinez fell in love with hip-hop at an early stage in her teenage life. Music had always been an inspiration to Angie considering her mother made a living as a program director for a jazz radio station.
She introduced her daughter to the world of music, even though at the time, Angie had a foul distaste for the seemingly bland sounds of radio. She was a hip-hop junkie from the moment of its incarnation and has been loyal to the game ever since.
While growing up near Coney Island, Angie ran with a wild bunch and began finding herself in troublesome predicaments. When her mother caught on to Angie's distressing social life, she packed their bags, and moved them to Miami in an effort to keep her daughter out of trouble.
It was at this point when Angie's love of hip-hop really started to set in. Ridding herself of the many distractions of her former neighborhood, Angie began to focus on her future. Her mother's musical influence began to take its toll on her and she landed her first job at a Miami radio station. Her tasks included a variety of odd jobs including organizing events and answering the phones.
Once Angie found her calling in the world of radio, she decided that it was time to make her return to New York. By landing a job at Hot 97 FM, she filled a spot as Funkmaster Flex's sidekick. In doing so, she was able to combine the two true loves of her life: hip-hop and radio.
Eventually, Angie found herself hosting her own on-air shift and she hasn't looked back since. Her mother's early teaching about station breaks and set lists finally began paying off as Angie evolved into one of New York's finest and most popular DJs of today's day and age. |
