With millions of albums sold in her native country, Anggun is perhaps the most popular artist ever to emerge from the cultural melting pot known as Indonesia. A relative unknown to North American audiences, Anggun Cipta Sasmi has been a staple on the music scene for almost two decades.
Born on April 29, 1974 in the capital city of Djakarta, her musical family had a profound impact on her life. With the melody of music all around her day and night, Anggun was raised to become a performer of some kind.
At the tender age of nine, Anggun released an album and soon became a star in Indonesia. Three years later, a veteran of the industry, she began a collaboration with reputed producer Ian Antono that spawned six hit albums over a seven-year period. Her sound at the time was influenced by rock and Western music in general. A veritable star in her homeland, Anggun founded a record company at 19 years old and began to produce on her own.
Always ready for a new challenge, the young singer left the comfort of home in 1995 for London and then Paris. Without the benefit of the native language but with a few precious connections, Anggun formed a partnership with a known songwriter/producer named Erick Benzi. The resulting album, Snow On The Sahara, cemented her place as an international artist with broad appeal. In fact, one of her songs from the album was used in a major advertising campaign by Swatch.
In 1998, Anggun received her first taste of the United States when she was featured on the Lilith Fair tour. She has also appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show and is hopeful that forthcoming releases will break into the North American market. Until then, however, Anggun will have to remain content to please her vast and loyal global fan club. |
