Anais Martinez was born on June 22, 1984. She grew up in the Dominican Republic, and she still considers the Caribbean country her home, however, the poverty in the Dominican Republic limited opportunities for Anais and her family, so she moved to New York City in 1994. Anais learned English, and yearned after the American dream, but still kept close ties to her background via the Dominican community in New York.
Once she was old enough, Anais began pursuing a career in singing and modeling, taking classes and lessons to help along the way. She took dancing lessons at The Door academy in New York and took vocal instruction from gospel and jazz singer Juanita Williams. Meanwhile, Anais held a number of hosting jobs on the local karaoke circuit to build up her exposure and singing experience.
In 2004, Anais auditioned to be a contestant on the second season of Objetivo Fama (Fame is the Goal), a Puerto Rican version of American Idol on the Univision network. Anais saw the talent show not as a diversion from her entertainment aspirations, but as the next logical step.
During the course of the show, Anais’ judgment was panned out; viewers responded enthusiastically to her energetic performances, and Objetivo Fama’s second season ended as a greater success than its first. When Anais won the contest on the show’s finale in May 2005, ratings for the New York affiliate of TeleFutura (the Univision network carrying Objetico Fama in the US) were higher than the local, English-language Fox affiliate. As part of the Objetivo Fama win, Anais landed a record deal with Univision Records.
Yet Anais’ achievement was marred by a minor scandal. Nude photos of her appeared on the internet right after Objetivo Fama ended, and for a time it seemed that her career would be derailed. But Anais publicly apologized for the photos, which she stated had been a mistake she had made some time earlier when she was in need of money. Her contracts and Objetivo Fama title weren’t taken from her after all, and Anais put out the single “Atrapada” later in 2005. |
