Ana Barbara was born Altagracia Ugalde Motta on January 10, 1973, in Rio Verde, Mexico. She never liked her name much, so for the sake of comfort and marketing, she uses her artist name instead.
She grew up in the Mexican backcountry, the desert state of San Luis Potos, where the agave grows and the lonely miners hustle daily for their modest bread. It's a place that spawns many talents in norteo, ranchero and Grupero music.
Ana's sister Viviana was one such singer, and 8-year-old Ana would sing backup vocals in her gigs. She loved the stage, the lights, the applause. She was hooked on music.
With her family's support, Ana entered a children's singing contest and took the top prize. The teenager was tall, skinny and awkward at the time, and didn't know what to make of it. But by 17, she had fully developed into a beautiful and confident young woman. This pushed her to enter the beauty circuit as well, and she soon after became Miss San Luis Potos in Mexico's national beauty pageant.
She had the voice and she had the looks, the two key ingredients to succeed. But things were moving slowly for her, and she began to despair. But with dedication and many shows, she was soon dubbed the Ambassador of Ranchero Music, and swept up regional awards. Her sister, once the woman Ana backed up, became her agent. |
