"You assess things differently. There's less pom-pom waving and more appreciation about the fanfare of the things that are real. So it's an exciting challenge to articulate faith at this point in the journey. But I think it's important for me to continue trying."

Amy Lee Grant was born November 25, 1960, in Augusta, Georgia, but was raised in Nashville, Tennessee. The Grant family returned to Nashville after her father, a doctor, completed his residency in Georgia.
Playing guitar for her high-school friends in Nashville, Amy Grant already showed the musical aptitude that would eventually propel her to stardom. Heavily influenced by the Church and the hymns played during services, she grew up dabbling in singing and songwriting at the city's most prestigious schools.
Grant's boost into the music industry seems like it was written from a storybook. Working at a local studio sweeping floors, a tape that she had made for her family was overheard by an executive in Nashville, who subsequently played it for his peers. Soon after, Grant was signed at the age of 17. She released her first album one year later and the world (and music charts) was introduced to a fresh, young face that would top the charts for at least another quarter-century.
The concept of crossing over was not out of reach for Grant, who, after seeing her reach as a new artist, established Christian music as an acceptable genre to all. With the 1982 album Age To Age, she proved that there was room for faith and gospel in pop. She received a Grammy for Best Contemporary Album in 1983 and followed it up with Straight Ahead, Unguarded and Heart In Motion, which spawned the single that introduced her to the rest of the pop music world in 1991: "Baby, Baby."
The success of "Baby, Baby" made her the first "Christian" musician to hit the number one spot on the Billboard charts, and it was followed up by the hit, "That's What Love Is For." Already married with two children, Grant was a huge star and still rising. |
