"What's up with that 'Girl Power' thing? I couldn't live without a man!?"--All Saints
|
 |
| The London-based group consisting of Shaznay, Melanie, Nicole, and Natalie broke through the international music scene with their hip-hop infused I Know Where It's At and followed it up with Never Ever . |

| This foursome has the right blend of voices, style, beauty, and talent that makes us hope they aren't really all saints. |

In 1993, All Saints began as a duo when Melanie Blatt and Shaznay Lewis recorded the song "If You Wanna Party" for ZTT records. The song was destined for failure as the girls and the record company were both oblivious to where they were heading with the song's recording, its approach and how to adequately market it.
Luckily in 1995, they came across Nathalie and Nicole's father, Mr. Appleton (Nat and Nicole were their former classmates from the London Sylvia Young stage school). He discovered that the girls were pursuing similar interests and suggested that they all get together.
They soon joined forces and dubbed the group after the street on which "If You Wanna Party" was originally recorded: "All Saints Road". They completed a demo tape and sent it off to London Records chairman Tracy Bennett, who signed them to a deal shortly after that.
They took the UK by storm with four Top 10 hits including "I Know Where It's At", "Never Ever", "Under the Bridge" and "Lady Marmalade". Their first appearance took place on a London lottery show, and the girls showcased their blend of soul, dance and funk with a taste of rap.
The foursome's mix of catchy tunes, playful lyrics and aesthetically appealing physical appearance delivers a combination that is a proven formula for success. Suffice it to say, the result has been endless yet inevitable comparisons to their fellow Brit superstars, the Spice Girls.
Nevertheless, the two groups have no real animosity towards each other beyond the normal competitive edge and publicity stunts that all bands brandish. In an interview with Dotmusic, Mel said, "We are real music fans. The Spice Girls are cool and it's amazing how they've burst out into this massive phenomenon, but the day they call themselves artists, I'll kill myself. We're much better looking and we've got more upstairs." |
