"I just wanted to write from the heart and let it be."
- Patty Griffin

Why Is She Famous?

Patty Griffin is not your average recording artist. Known for her folk-rock blend of music, Patty has changed the way folk and country artists are viewed. Her unique voice and uninhibited music have truly carried her throughout her career, as she has made most of her albums independent of her major record label's rules and regulations.

Patty Griffin was on March 16, 1964, in Old Town, Maine. She is the youngest of seven children and was born into a family of singers. Patty bought her first guitar at the age of 16, and it was around that same that she began to write her own songs. However, it was quite a while before she started to perform with her self-engineered band, Patty and the Executives, in 1980. It wasn't until 1992 in Boston that Patty Griffin started accumulating gigs to show off her music prowess.

But when she finally did start performing, Boston music lovers quickly turned in her favor, and before she knew it, she was amassing music gigs all over Boston. Patty's success led to a desire to take her music to the next level; she began recording a series of demos. Without the money to produce professionally recorded tapes, Patty recorded out of her apartment. Her demo tapes were regarded as being better than her performances by many, and the sharing of her tapes eventually led to her signing with a record label.

A&M dropped Patty's contract after Silver Bell, and she was picked up by Dave Matthews' ATO Records. Four albums have followed so far on ATO, including 2002's Grammy-nominated 1000 Kisses.

In 2004, Griffin toured with Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings as the Sweet Harmony Traveling Revue. On February 6, 2007, she released Children Running Through. The album debuted at #34 on the Billboard 200 with 27,000 copies sold.

Griffin has appeared in several movies including Cremaster 2 and in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown the soundtrack of which also included her song "Long Ride Home".

In 2007, the Atlantic Theater Company will produce "10 Million Miles," a musical based on the music of Patty Griffin, with book by Keith Bunin, directed by Michael Mayer.
