Mia Abagale Tyler was born on December 22, 1978, in Hanover, New Hampshire. Mia grew up in New Hampshire, raised by her mother Cyrinda Foxe-Tyler. Mia's father, Steven Tyler, lead singer for the iconic rock band Aerosmith, was separated from Cyrinda, and the two would later divorce in 1987. Nevertheless, Mia knew her famous father, and they had a good relationship.
So it came as a surprise when, at age 8, Mia discovered she had a half-sister. Attending an Aerosmith concert, Mia met another little girl who looked exactly like her: Liv Rundgren. The meeting led to the revelation that Liv, whose mother was model and Play..boy Play..mate Bebe Buell, was also Steven Tyler's daughter -- something Liv had suspected, but did not know for sure. Mia and Liv became close, realizing that they had much in common, like a youthful fondness for getting perms. Liv, who is almost a year and a half Mia's elder, has since changed her name to Liv Tyler, becoming a successful model and actress in her own right.

In 1990, Mia moved with her mother to New York City, where she attended Manhattan's Professional Children's School. But during adolescence, Mia lacked direction. At age 16, Mia helped direct an indie movie. Then, taking up acting, she appeared on MTV's House of Style and the 1997 pilot of the CBS series, Michael Hayes.
The following year, one of Mia's showbiz friends who had gotten a job at a PR firm suggested an alternative: posing for Lane Bryant, a clothing line/retailer that was looking for models. At first, Mia said no. But when the offer was presented again, Mia took it. "I was still a spoiled daddy's girl," Mia revealed. "Not a wussy one but, you know, I was sitting on my butt doing nothing. No aspirations. So I thought, 'Well, it's money and I haven't made any of my own yet.'" |
