Laila Ali came into this world on December 30th, 1977. As the youngest child of legend, humanitarian and boxing great Muhammad Ali, she grew up rather comfortably in Miami Beach, Florida. Her mother, Veronica Porsche Anderson, made sure she remained level-headed and instilled in her the importance of hard work and education.
After moving to California, Ali continued to live a somewhat sheltered existence, but no one could hide the fact that she and her now ailing father had so many similar traits. Ambition, confidence and stubbornness are all Ali family trademarks, and she had all of them. They were put to good use in her first business venture, a nail salon which she owned and operated.
School remained important, however, and she enrolled at Santa Monica College in preparation for studies at the University of Southern California Business School. She earned a degree in Business Management and was about to become even more of an entrepreneur when a TV program changed her path forever.
As she watched a televised women's boxing match, the competitive, athletic spirit in Ali was awakened. Suddenly, she was driven to try her hand in the ring, like her father. After training, she was a buff 5'10" and 168 pounds of lean muscle. The media quickly picked up on the fact that the Ali name was returning to the ring and much hype surrounded her professional debut on October 8th, 1999. |
