| Like a strong cup of coffee first thing in the morning, Katie Couric has been a staple of network morning television since 1991. We don't expect to see her leave her Today show post anytime soon. |
 |
| Katie is most famous for her long-running association with NBC's top-rated morning program, Today. After becoming the show's first national correspondent in 1990, she became its coanchor in April of 1991. She can also be seen as a regular contributor to Dateline NBC, and has made cameo appearances in Austin Powers in Goldmember and NBC's Will & Grace (both in 2002), and also provided the voice of Katie Current in the animated feature Shark Tale (2004). |

Katherine Anne Couric was born on January 7, 1957, in Arlington, Virginia. She entered the University of Virginia in 1975, and graduated with honors in 1979. Following graduation, she was hired by the ABC News bureau in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a desk assistant. In 1980, she became an assignment editor at CNN. After relocating to Atlanta, she became an associate producer and later, producer of a news and information program.
Katie started out as a reporter handling general assignments for WTVJ in Miami in 1984. In 1987, she joined NBC affiliate WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. as a reporter, where she remained until 1989. During that time, she won an Emmy and an Associated Press Award for her work. She married Jay Monahan in 1989.
In July 1989, Katie became a full-fledged reporter for NBC News, joining the broadcast team as a Pentagon correspondent. Between 1989 and 1991, she substituted for journalists such as Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley, Deborah Norville, and Maria Shriver during their absence, either hosting, cohosting or reading the news.
Katie became a national correspondent for Today in 1990 and a permanent cohost in April of 1991, after Norville left to take care of her newborn. Katie herself took some time off after daughter Elinor was born in July of 1991. A second daughter, Caroline, arrived in January of 1996.
In 1992, Katie began working at Dateline NBC, where she collaborated regularly as a reporter. She was also given the opportunity to host several special programs, including 1995's Everybody's Business: America's Children. |
