Born in Bolton, England on January 14, 1979, Karen Elson grew up a tall, skinny, awkward redhead. She was frequently teased about her lengthy proportions, but when she was 16, these same features caught the eye of a modeling scout. Soon, Elson moved to London in an effort to capitalize on this newfound beauty.
Unfortunately, modeling work was hard to come by in the English capital, so Elson packed up and moved to Paris. The City of Lights was also unaccommodating for Elson, but she heard that Japan had a lot of work for a tall redhead, so she moved once again to Tokyo.

It was in this bustling metropolis that Elson first found fame, and she used the experience she gained there as leverage to find work in a fashion mecca: Milan, Italy. A chance encounter with established photographer Steven Meisel led to a spread, followed by a cover shoot, for Italian Vogue. She was then able to move to New York just before her 18th birthday. In the Big Apple, she worked for the likes of Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, and Versace, and appeared in a slew of magazines as well.

On June 1, 2005, the established model married Jack White of the White Stripes in a canoe on the Amazon River. She also appeared in the Stripes' video Blue Orchid.
