Born November 25, 1981, in Dallas, Texas, Jenna Welch Bush came into this world one minute after her sororal twin, Barbara. The family of four, headed by dad George W. and mom Laura, moved frequently during the twins' childhood: from Dallas to Washington D.C. for grandpa George's presidential campaign, back to Dallas as the younger George bought the Texas Rangers, on to Austin after he became Governor, and finally to Washington for G.W.'s presidency.
Though she became used to her parents being in the spotlight as high-profile politicians, Jenna was never comfortable with the media and shied away from photographers whenever they came around. When her father was announced as the Republican candidate for the 2000 presidential election, however, it put more pressure on Jenna and her sister to assume the perpetual role of the smiling, polite daughters.
As the Bush family settled into the White House following George W.'s victory, Jenna made an effort to remain in the shadows in terms of media coverage. It wasn't an easy time for her, but eventually Jenna's free spirit prevailed, and she relaxed as she began her studies at the University of Texas at Austin. It was there that Jenna began to attract attention as an underage partier. Twice in the spring of 2001 she was charged and fined for drinking or attempting to obtain alcohol while underage. The stories of her rebelliousness and subsequent community service got Jenna into hot water.
Though she never had problems with the police after that tumultuous time, the headlines still blared about Jenna's fun-loving ways. Along with her sister, Jenna was reputed to attend loads of celebrity parties in New York, where she had an apartment. Stories from anonymous friends and paparazzi photos added fuel to the fire, as did actor Ashton Kutcher's allegations that he saw the First Twins smoking marijuana after a night of partying. Throughout much of this period, Jenna worked as an intern at Harrison & Shriftman, a public relations firm. |
