"I think there's nothing better in the world than a spirited discussion about the Bible and Jesus and God and the Catholic faith, or the Jewish faith, or the Muslim faith -- any religion."
-Elizabeth Vargas

| Unlike most of the stuffed shirts on network news, Elizabeth Vargas is a versatile talent who's not afraid to take on new challenges. According to Phyllis McGrady, a Senior Vice President at ABC, "Elizabeth is one of the most flexible talents I've ever worked with. She could do interviews, and do hour-long specials that make you think, and then she'll do a great interview with P. Diddy." |
 |
| Elizabeth Vargas is the Emmy Award-winning co-anchor of ABC's World News Tonight and 20/20. Before joining the network, she was a substitute co-host for The Today Show. |

Elizabeth Vargas was born September 6, 1962, in Paterson, New Jersey. However, she didn't stay there long. The daughter of a U.S. Army colonel, she spent most of her childhood being shuttled from one international base to another, including stops in Stuttgard, Frankfurt, Brussels, Okinawa, Indiana, Kansas, and California. With so many changes of address, the only constant Elizabeth had in her life was her family. "Family is so important in so many Latin cultures," she says. "My father was relentless about that."
When it came time to choose a university, Elizabeth packed up her suitcase yet again and traveled to the University of Missouri, where she majored in journalism. When she wasn't hitting the books, Elizabeth was covering the day's breaking stories as an anchorwoman for the school's television station, KOMU-TV.
Following graduation, Elizabeth spent a brief time at stations in Reno and Phoenix before eventually finding a home in Chicago at WBBM-TV. The station's executive producer, Edward Marshall, recalls being impressed by the young reporter's take charge attitude. "She really took ownership of a story once she was on it," he says.
That was especially evident in August, 1990, when she was live on the scene of a horrific tornado in Plainfield, Illinois. "She really distinguished herself," Marshall recalls. "You can't prepare for those things, but she handled it effortlessly without being breathless." |
