Born during the height of the Communist revolution in Havana, Cuba, Carmen Garcia only saw her homeland for a mere eight months before her family escaped to Madrid, Spain. They lived there for 3 years, before joining their compatriots in the largest Cuban enclave outside of Cuba -- Miami.
Carmen's teen years were tough, as her dizzyingly fast metabolism and active lifestyle made her noticeably underweight. She would suffer name-calling every day, and even her family bribed her to eat more. Her appetite improved in her late teens, when she would scarf down junk food and six glasses of whole milk a day. Still, her form hardly changed other than packing a little tummy fat.
She graduated high school and moved to South Beach, where she ran a Brazilian bikini shop. Her Portuguese-speaking clientele gave the bilingual young Carmen one more language to put under her belt.
At this time she began weightlifting, going on the advice of expert bodybuilders, and finally noticed a change in her body. She then caught the travel bug and moved to San Diego for college, where she studied business, photography and fashion marketing. She also became a certified personal trainer and tried to model, but gave up because she wasn't tall enough or thin enough for the current tastes.
Tired of the easygoing San Diego lifestyle, she moved to L.A., where she discovered her true calling. Picking up a fitness magazine, she was awestruck by how beautiful the strong, toned women were. She hit the gym with unbridled passion and quickly began to resemble the fitness models, whom she was determined to become |
