"[Men] couldn't handle me. I'm really interested in living in the moment. It's been all good so far. Idealistic and realistic are only separated by changing someone's mind. Our brain is one of the most changeable and influenceable parts of our bodies."

| Oversexed and overhyped icons of the MTV generation are, well, overdone. Ananda is a refreshing splash of realness in the agonizingly synthetic youth market. Sassy, ballsy and unpredictable, she makes our hearts race, whether she's interviewing celebrities or tackling tough issues affecting teens. |
 |
| Once a no-holds-barred host on BET, Ananda made her bones as a VJ on MTV, then became the star of her own talk show. Today she's the face of the entertainment show The Insider, giving viewers an exclusive glimpse into the lives of celebrities. |

Ananda Lewis, born on March 21, 1973, in San Diego, has always been a performer. She had her first theater audience when she was only 3, and went on to spend nine years refining her dramatics at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. It was this excited extroversion that set Ananda on her career path, but in her childhood it frequently got her in trouble -- almost every night her mother got a call from her teachers.
While Ananda loved the stage, her passion for social justice was stronger. At age 13 she volunteered at the Head Start agency, helping kids from poor families. After a traumatizing episode with a boyfriend, Ananda focused her energies on teaching young girls about date rape and abstinence.
After high school, Ananda flew across the country to attend Howard University in Washington, where she studied history with an eye towards becoming a teacher. Her spare hours were spent volunteering at Youth at Risk, an organization that helps troubled teens sort out their lives.
After graduation, Ananda's plans changed. She rediscovered her love for the spotlight, and set about pursuing a career in entertainment. She combined her work in front of the camera with her dedication to social work in hosting Teen Summit on the Black Entertainment Television (BET) network, a show covering serious topics like drug use and teen pregnancy. Ananda's efforts on the show won her a Cable Ace nomination and a NAACP Image Award in 1996. |
