| Woody became known for portraying a nervous, nebbishy New Yorker in his many movies. Some of the best-known films include Sleeper, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Deconstructing Harry, and Match Point. |

Despite his prolific output, Woody's films usually don't perform all that well commercially in his native America. U.S. audiences are generally split on their opinions on his movies, as he's the type of artist who’s either worshipped as a genius or almost ignored. In Europe, however, (particularly in France and Italy) his films are very well received by both critics and audiences alike, making the release of a new Woody Allen picture something of a mini-event on the other side of the Atlantic.
Match Point (2005) starred Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson, and earned him some of his best reviews and box office profits in a decade. Allen was nominated for Golden Globes as Best Director and Writer, and for an Oscar for his screenplay. The film also received a César nod for Best Foreign Film, and earned him the Goya award for Best European Film. Scoop (2006) a romantic comedy set in London, stars Johansson and Hugh Jackman. |
