| Sufjan Stevens might just be one of the world’s most ambitious songwriters. As the creative genius behind the albums Michigan and Illinois, Stevens recently announced his intention to make an album for each of the 50 states. |

Next up are Oregon and Rhode Island; although his fans are understandably excited to hear his new releases, those looking for keen political and historical insights would be wise to search elsewhere. "[Oregon and Rhode Island] will have nothing to do with actual place names and histories,” he explains. “They'll be more abstract or more figurative."
2005 saw a return to the “50 States Project” as Stevens released Illinois. Easily his most popular release to date, the upbeat album was named “Album of the Year” by Metacritic, Pitchfork Media and the PLUG Independent Music Awards. Illinois was a natural pick for his second “State” album; "[It] had a lot to do with my perception of Illinois generally as being robust and vigorous, and a great historical summary of American capitalism in some ways."
In 2006, Stevens released The Avalanche, a compilation of extras and outtakes from Illinois. |
