Robert L. Johnson is the first black American to achieve billionaire status, and currently ranks amongst the 400 richest men in America, according to the Forbes list for 2006. He founded Black Entertainment Television (BET), which debuted in January 1980, and served as its president and chief operating officer until 2005, when he handed the reins to Debra Lee, the former BET vice president.

In 1998, Johnson bought all of BET’s stock and took the company private and at the turn of the century Viacom purchased the cable channel for $3 billion. Johnson also heads The RLJ Companies, which encompasses an empire of financial services, real estate, professional sports, film production, gaming, and the Three Keys Music recording studio, as well as hotels and restaurants.

In addition to running RLJ Companies, Johnson serves on the boards of major corporations such as Hilton Hotels, General Mills and U.S. Airways. He also holds the distinction of being the first black American to become principal owner of a major league sports club in North America. In September 2006, Johnson announced plans to head a delegation of leading blacks in fields as varied as health, education, law, and business, to help in the development of the African nation of Liberia.
