| Nas proved that he was one of rap’s fiercest lyricists when he released his critically acclaimed debut album, Illmatic, in 1994. More than a decade later, he’s still on top of his game. “What I'm doing has hardly ever been done,” he boasts. “Usually artists don't make it this far. It's never been seen that a street artist go as far as I've gone -- keep consistent without wanting to do a bunch of ventures outside of music to keep my face out there.” |

Nas hit the charts again in 2004 with Street’s Disciple, an edgy double LP that debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. “That album was a milestone period for me,” Nas says. “It was my triumph in this business. The focus for that record was definitely not about what was going on at radio at the time. It was about me doing different stuff.” Nas’ inventiveness clearly appealed to his fans, and Street's Disciple was certified platinum by November 2005.
Happily in love, Nas put old disagreements behind him in 2006 and signed a deal with Jay-Z's Def Jam Recordings. That same year, he released the album Hip Hop Is Dead, a searing commentary on the crass overcommercialization of the hip-hop industry. Nas has also been putting together a compilation of tracks for The Lost Tapes 2. |
