As the man behind such legendary flicks as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as iconic American filmmakers Orson Welles, John Ford and Stanley Kubrick. Martin -- or Marty, as he’s known by his friends and peers -- has conquered virtually every genre he’s attempted, from comedies (1985’s After Hours) to religious epics (1989’s The Last Temptation of Christ) to period pieces (1993’s The Age of Innocence). Even his box-office bombs (1977’s New York, New York) remain intriguing on certain levels, and there’s simply no denying that Martin Scorsese will go down in the archives of film history as one of the geniuses of his time.
Scorsese’s efforts in the cinematic world are so significant that he was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and he was awarded the French Legion of Honor on January 5, 2005, in recognition of his contributions. |

| When he’s not directing feature-length movies, Martin is working behind the scenes on documentaries, commercials and other film endeavors. He’s also extremely active within the world of film preservation, as evidenced by the creation of The Film Foundation of which he is president. Given that half of all American movies produced before 1950 have been lost forever, The Film Foundation is devoted to ensuring the continued existence and availability of the remaining titles. And, like fellow Top 49 finalist Quentin Tarantino, Martin has a massive collection of 35mm film prints -- he even has a private curator on staff. |

take a break from making big-budget films, citing 2006’s wildly successful The Departed as his last big-budget endeavor for a while. "I think I am figuring out that when a film has a very big budget that means that fewer risks can be taken," Scorsese said. "I don't know how much longer I can hold out in regard to the kind of movie the major studios would like to make and the kind of film I would like to make."
