| Pavarotti has been described by Connie Chung as "the opera star with the bad boy charisma." We're not quite sure why she refers to him as such, but we appreciate the fact that he helped bridge the gap between classical and popular music. |

| Luciano Pavarotti is the most popular artist in the history of the classical recording industry. As a member of the Three Tenors, the Maestro's name has become a household word, and he's also performed with a broad range of pop, rock and jazz artists. |

On December 13, 2003, Pavarotti married Mantovani in his Italian hometown. Guests at the star-studded ceremony included Donatella Versace, Sting and Bono, and his family, while Andrea Bocelli sang "Ave Maria." He made his final appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in March 2004, in a series of three sold-out performances of Tosca. In October, Herbert Breslin, Pavarotti's former manager, press agent and confidant of some 35 years, published The King & I: The Uncensored Tale of Luciano Pavarotti's Rise to Fame, a "warts-and-all expos" of the great tenor.
In January of 2005, Pavarotti reunited with U2 for the B-side of their single "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own." A 40-date worldwide tour to bid farewell to his fans will culminate in his retirement from professional singing on his 70th birthday, in October 2005.
Of course it may be difficult for the world's most famous and beloved tenor to retire completely; he already plans to interrupt his departure from the world stage to reunite with Carreras and Domingo for the 2006 World Cup. |
