Lance Armstrong
His Words
“Pain is temporary; it may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place.”

What Makes Him so Famous?
Lance Armstrong is one of the most successful road-racing cyclists ever. By winning the sport’s most prestigious race -- the Tour de France -- a record seven consecutive times, Armstrong has cemented himself among the all-time greats. More impressive is the fact that he started his winning streak after recovering from brain, lung and testicular cancer. His well-publicized recovery from these highly fatal illnesses paved the way for the birth of his charity foundation -- The Lance Armstrong Foundation. The Livestrong yellow bracelets, which are a product of the Foundation and are worn to support the battle for cancer, have become a chic fashion accessory and can be seen almost everywhere nowadays.
Back Stage
Armstrong’s career outside of cycling might have you believe he’s more of a movie star. He has done cameos in hit movies such as Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) and You, Me and Dupree (2006). He has made the talk show rounds, including Live with Regis and Kelly, The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. And he also did the comedy circuit with Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Show with David Letterman, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Armstrong has also completed a book entitled It’s Not About the Bike, which topped the bestsellers’ list and garnered him the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award in 2000.

Much of his recent focus has been placed on his foundation. The original priority was to raise $5 million in sales from the Livestrong bracelets, and as of 2006, sales have surpassed $62 million worldwide. He also spends a lot of his time making appearances and giving motivational talks as a cancer survivor.
Forcaste
Armstrong has shown interest in a career in politics, possibly running for governor of Texas. But whether or not he does end up running for office, Lance does want to become more politically involved to increase cancer awareness and to eventually improve the policies toward the disease.

On an athletic front, Armstrong revealed to The Associated Press in April that he plans to compete in the New York City Marathon in November 2006.
