Having cut his teeth on the popular ‘80s television show 21 Jump Street and a whole host of schlocky films (like 1985’s sex comedy Private Resort), Johnny Depp deftly transformed himself into a reliable yet thoroughly unpredictable cinematic presence via a series of memorable films, such as 1990’s Edward Scissorhands, 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and 2001’s Blow. Johnny’s star status changed exponentially with the release of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film in 2003, which garnered him his first Academy Award nomination.
His second nomination came the following year for his poignant performance in 2004’s Finding Neverland. Now raking in a reported $20 million per film, it's clear that Depp’s onscreen charisma and bad-boy charm make him an undeniable box-office draw. |

Though he’s been linked with many famous faces in the past (including Kate Moss and Winona Ryder), Johnny seems to have found true love with French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis. The pair has two children and currently resides in France. Johnny’s desire to keep his family out of the public eye has thus far proven to be extremely successful, and as such, he’s generally had few run-ins with the paparazzi and their ilk.
Little is known of Johnny’s extracurricular activities, though he has long-since established himself as a thoroughly adept musician; he used to be in a band called P and has made appearances on a couple of Oasis songs. His passion for music is also reflected in his ownership -- along with Sean Penn and John Malkovich -- of a Parisian nightclub called Man Ray. |

Now that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest has become one of the top-grossing films in cinematic history, Johnny seemingly has the ability to write his own ticket. But rather than take on a big-budget action film or a predictable romantic comedy, Johnny is thus far sticking to his quirky, almost avant-garde roots. In addition to next year’s conclusion to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Johnny is currently prepping an adaptation of the Sweeney Todd musical with frequent collaborator Tim Burton.
Johnny has also put on the producer’s hat for the first time in his career, as he is producing a slew of movies slated for release in 2007 and 2008, such as A Long Way Down, The Rum Diary and Happy Days. |
