| Joaquin Phoenix comes from a family full of performers, but he has slowly set himself apart thanks to his unique looks and undeniable talent. |
 |
| Joaquin Phoenix spent much of his youth known primarily for being River Phoenix's younger brother, but the performer has long since established himself as one of his generation's finest actors. Whether he's playing a murderous high schooler (in 1995's To Die For), a hapless patsy (1998's Clay Pigeons) or a rock 'n' roll legend (2005's Walk the Line), Phoenix is able to convincingly step into the shoes of just about anybody. |
 |
Though Joaquin was a respected performer, he wasn't quite yet considered a movie star -- something that irrevocably changed in 2000, with the release of Gladiator. As the sneering villain Commodus, Joaquin deftly stole scenes from star Russell Crowe and even landed his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He spent the next few years taking supporting roles in critically acclaimed films, including 2002's Signs and 2004's The Village and Hotel Rwanda. 2005 left Phoenix reeling in praise for his work as legendary singer Johnny Cash in James Mangold's Walk the Line, for which he received his second Oscar nomination.
2005 was also a notable year, as Joaquin checked himself into rehab to deal with a drinking problem. His first professional endeavor following that ordeal was a gig directing a music video for the band Ringside (his directorial debut). |
