“The American motorist is the most aggressive creature on earth.”

Jeremy Clarkson is not the least bit afraid to piss off anyone, whether it’s the average American ("Most Americans barely have the brains to walk on their back legs”) or British royalty ("People often criticize (Camilla Parker-Bowles) because she's approaching 60, but they forget that Princess Diana was approaching 120 when she went into that tunnel."). In fact, he unapologetically does it on a regular basis.
At 6’5”, the outspoken Brit is figuratively and literally a towering figure in journalism. Here in the U.S., we’re most familiar with his appearances as a host of TV’s Top Gear. Over there, the BBC’s car enthusiast show represents only a part of Clarkson’s itinerary. He’s also an author and columnist in The Sun and The Sunday Times. Whatever the venue, controversy is never far away. |

Seemingly, Clarkson is just as forthright in his personal life, having installed a fighter jet on the lawn of his country home -- though it was later revealed to be little more than a publicity stunt. Clarkson is also deeply interested in technology and engineering. He holds honorary degrees from Brunel University and Oxford Brookes University. At the ceremony for the latter, an environmental activist also honored him with a pie to the face. Maybe it was for Clarkson’s comments like, “I do have a disregard for the environment. I think the world can look after itself and we should enjoy it as best as we can."
Clarkson reminds us his comments are usually intended as humorous; he hates everybody equally. Whether you agree with him or not, he is a man of conviction and he reminds us to live by our own convictions rather than blindly follow convention. |

Clarkson’s work can be read regularly in The Sun and The Sunday Times newspapers. In the U.S., we mostly have to settle for sporadic showings of Top Gear. Despite this and past criticism by members of Parliament claiming the show is obsessed with speed, Top Gear's popularity will likely prevail.
”I favor an IQ test that must be passed before anyone's allowed a provisional (driver’s) license. But where do we set the limit? Technically, anyone with an IQ of less than 50 is an idiot, but I think 100 sounds like a nice number. I reckon this would probably get somewhere between 90 and 95 per cent of all cars off the road. In some ways, that's rather depressing. In others, it's not depressing at all.”
