Best known as “The Naked Chef,” Jamie Oliver is one of the most recognizable food personalities in the world and the second most popular presenter on the Food Network.
Jamie has achieved considerable popularity around the world and has penned a slew of cookbooks, such as The Naked Chef, Jamie’s Italy, Jamie’s Dinner, and Jamie’s Kitchen -- with The Naked Chef spending 10 weeks as a best seller. In addition to books that he has released, Oliver has been a dominant figure on TV, appearing on shows such as Jamie’s Return to School Dinners, Jamie’s Great Escape, Oliver’s Twist, The Naked Chef, and numerous others.
In 2005, it was announced by Caterer and Hotelkeeper that Jamie was the most influential person in the U.K. hospitality industry, knocking down Sir Francis MacKay -- chairman of a well-known and well-established catering company. However, in 2006 Jamie fell to second place behind Gordon Ramsay.
As for endorsements, Jamie has been the face and voice of the Sainsbury's supermarket chain since 2000. The contract with Sainsbury's earns Jamie an estimated $2.2 million annually. Not too shabby for a kid who dropped out of high school. |

After dropping out of school, a 16-year-old Jamie went off to attend the Westminster Catering College, after which he spent several years working under Executive Chef Gennaro Contaldo. Surely it was Jamie’s difficult time as a youth that led to his concept for Fifteen -- a charity restaurant in which he trains 15 disadvantaged kids to work within the service industry. An undoubted success story, Jamie has expanded the Fifteen concept to Fifteen Amsterdam, Fifteen Cornwall in Newquay and Fifteen Melbourne.
Among Jamie’s other interests is music. He has been playing drums with his old friends since he was 13 and their band, Scarlet Division, was even signed by Sony. In fact, the group's debut single, “Sundial,” reached No. 42 on the UK charts. Unfortunately, Scarlet Division was dropped soon after because the band could not be taken seriously due to Jamie’s celebrity status.
As for Jamie's other humanitarian work, his interests stemmed from running a school kitchen for a year and becoming disgusted with the unhealthy food that was being served, as well as the lack of healthy alternatives. Subsequently, he began to successfully lobby the government for money to improve lunches in public schools. Tony Blair has given credit to Jamie’s campaign and has pledged $522.4 million through the course of three years to improve school lunches.
In 2003, Jamie was honored by receiving the MBE -- a British order of chivalry -- in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. |

As for his future work, Jamie continues to produce more books, including his biography, Jamie Oliver: Turning Up The Heat, and another cookbook, Cooking With Jamie.
Above and beyond the aforementioned books, Jamie continues to campaign stridently for improving the quality of school lunches. Appalled by the junk food being served, Jamie launched the Feed Me Better campaign and 2007 will likely see its continuation. |
