The risk-taking, visionary chief designer for BMW Group is no stranger to polarized reactions for his style. His 2002 restyle of the BMW 7 Series is one of his most controversial designs out there. Nevertheless, he has continued to follow his artistic philosophy with other forward-thinking efforts, including the very successful Z4. Even if you still feel he’s a cad for his CAD, you can’t deny his perseverance against such adversity. |

Obviously, the goal is to sell vehicles, but Bangle’s artistic direction -- partially inspired by architect Frank Gehry -- doesn’t compromise for the sake of the bottom line. In fact, he’s posted signs declaring “Stop; No Entry” outside studios to avoid negative intrusions and commentary from within the company.
Outside the design centers, he commonly plays the role of arbitrator to ensure harmony between the creative, technical and business-driven teams. Beyond Munich, he drove a vintage BMW in Italy’s 2006 Mille Miglia and is on the board of directors for BMW’s DesignworksUSA studios.
His critics have grumbled that he’s egotistical, but his supporters counter that he’s focused and enthusiastic and has a strong sense of conviction in his artistic philosophy. |

As the international auto show season begins, we’ll get our first looks at Bangle-led introductions and updates, including the 3 Series Coupe, Z4 M, M6 Cabriolet, MINI Cooper, and X3.
It has been suggested the overall look and feel of the current BMW car line will continue on its course for a few more years. Naturally, Bangle and his team will incorporate incremental changes to extend the appeal of the Group’s vehicles, which include BMW motorcycles, the aforementioned MINI Cooper and the Rolls-Royce. In the next few years, we suspect Bangle will introduce the next generation of style cues to the BMW car line.
