Besides being the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in New York and an accomplished author of eight books, Anthony Bourdain is one of the most wry and witty personalities in the world of cooking. A fact exemplified in his reaction to being selected for the Top 49, "While strangely uncomfortable with the term 'man's man' I am honored to be included,“ said Anthony Bourdain. “I shall be sure to spend the week shooting things, barbecuing, drinking manly drinks to excess and high-fiving loudly while watching organized athletics. Woo Hoo! I love you, man!"
In 2000, Bourdain gained recognition for his book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. The book detailed his personal life working in restaurant kitchens, and it was so popular that FOX turned the memoirs into a short-lived 2005 television series of the same name. Bourdain’s second venture into television debuted in July 2005 when Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations premiered on the Travel Channel. The show chronicles Bourdain as he visits exotic countries and cities worldwide and is treated to local culture and cuisine.
Anthony Bourdain is also known for his tough-as-nails attitude, which is often seen with his outspoken, public criticisms of other chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Rachael Ray. On the other hand, Bourdain also uses his privileged position to take on celebrity chefs like Rocco DiSpirito and offer kudos to restaurants that try daring approaches to food preparation and that offer cutting-edge dishes. |

When he’s not cooking, writing about cooking or traveling to make documentaries about cooking, Anthony Bourdain takes time out to try his hand at other talents. In 2006, he appeared on Miami Ink, the reality-based television series on TLC. Bourdain received his fourth tattoo (a skull) on the show to complement one he received while filming No Reservations.
Anthony Bourdain also considers himself a music connoisseur and enthusiast. He dedicated his 2006 writing effort, The Nasty Bits, to the Ramones. Bourdain also used this book as a platform to express his love for the punk band The Stooges and offer his scathing disapproval of music by Billy Joel and ABBA. He states that playing tunes from these artists in the kitchen would result in an instant dismissal.
While Bourdain certainly has a way with food, he’s obviously demonstrated that he has a way with words, having penned two crime novels -- Bone in the Throat (1995) and Gone Bamboo (1997) -- in addition to his other works. |

Anthony Bourdain is in the midst of filming the second season of the highly popular No Reservations, for which he’s been traveling around the world in an attempt to share his passion for cuisine with a wider audience.
