R&B singer and Oscar-winning star Jennifer Hudson broke down first time for publicly about the murders of her mother, brother and nephew. The singer lost her mother Darnell Hudson Donerson, 57, brother Jason Hudson, 29, were found dead in their Chicago home and 7-year-old nephew Julian King was found in an abandoned car days later in a terrible shooting spree in October 2008.
The 'American Idol' contestant, who went on to win an Academy Award three years ago for a supporting role in her feature debut "Dreamgirls," said suffered deep depression after this horrific event took place and said that she secluded herself from everyone after it all happened.
"It's all a blur. It was surreal," she said during an episode of U.S. cable channel VH1's documentary series "Behind the Music" broadcast on Monday. "It was like I was outside of myself."
All three had been shot. William Balfour, Jennifer's sister Julia's estranged husband, has been charged with first degree murder and home invasion, but has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Hudson, now 28, disappeared from the spotlight for a few months after the murders, recalling that for two weeks she basically stayed in one room with family and friends.
"Working with the extraordinary cast of Dreamgirls was humbling and exciting all in one. I pushed myself with every scene, to stay caught up with the talent I was portraying, as well as the talent I was working alongside."

Jennifer Kate Hudson was born September 12, 1981 in Chicago, Illinois. A naturally outgoing and charismatic child, she sang in public for the first time at the age of 7 when she was given the opportunity to lead her congregation in a rousing gospel number. "I really enjoyed getting the church up on their feet, their hips swaying, their hands clapping, it's was a great feeling to evoke that energy for the Lord," she recalls. That initial performance hooked her, and Jennifer spent the rest of her childhood starring in school talent shows, local music productions and church socials. Jennifer turned her passion into her profession in 2002, when she landed a six-month gig as a featured vocalist aboard the Disney Wonder cruise ship. Although she was grateful for the work, Jennifer admits the experience was sometimes unnerving, particularly given her complete inability to swim. "Once you get on the ship, you have to do [emergency] drills with the officers," she recalls. "We had to do a 'wet' drill and I'm thinking it's going to be a little sprinkle. Honey, they took us out and hung us over the side of the ship in one of those little boats just in midair and then they made us get out at Castaway Key and hop off of a two-story cliff into the water."
