| Robin Wright Penn has consistently won critical praise, if not commercial clout, by going against the grain of the almighty Hollywood system. |

Born in Dallas, Texas, on April 8, 1966, Robin Virginia Gayle Wright grew up in San Diego, California. She began modeling when she was 14, working out of both Paris and Tokyo. Following high school, she made up her mind to pursue acting as a profession. In 1984, she landed the role of Kelly Capwell on the NBC daytime soap opera Santa Barbara. She remained with the series until 1988, and received three Daytime Emmy nominations during her run with the show.
Wright married actor Dane Witherspoon in 1986; their marriage would end in divorce two years later. She made her big-screen debut playing Lori Stanton in the 1986 feature Hollywood Vice Squad, but would have to wait until her next film to receive widespread notice. In 1987, she played Buttercup in the title role of The Princess Bride, which became a major box-office hit.
Following her departure from Santa Barbara in 1988, Wright landed the role of Lucrezia in the 1989 television miniseries A TV Dante and costarred with Jason Patric in the 1990 feature Denial. The pair became romantically involved until she met Sean Penn on the set of her next film, State of Grace, later that same year.
Wright had her first child with Penn, a daughter named Dylan Frances, on April 13, 1991. She had been offered the role of Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), starring Kevin Costner, but bowed out after learning that she was pregnant. She returned to the big screen in 1992 after Annette Bening passed on the role of Tara Maguire in The Playboys, and gave one of the best performances of her career. She was next seen in the comedy Toys (1992), starring Robin Williams.
Wright backed out of another big role, this time as Abby McDeere in 1993's The Firm after becoming pregnant with her second child. A son, Hopper Jack Penn, was born on August 6, 1993. In 1994, she starred as Jenny Curran, the title character's lifelong love interest in the blockbuster hit and Oscar-winning Best Picture Forrest Gump, opposite Tom Hanks. She earned her first Golden Globe nomination for her performance, as well as a Screen Actors Guild nod for Best Supporting Actress.
She next appeared in The Crossing Guard (1995), directed by Penn and costarring Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston.
After turning down over a dozen film offers, including Batman Forever (1995) and Sabrina (1995), Robin reemerged in the title role of Moll Flanders in the 1996 feature directed by Pen Densham. After almost six years with Sean, she became Mrs. Robin Wright Penn on April 27, 1996, when she and the former Mr. Madonna tied the knot.
She and Penn reunited on the silver screen in She's So Lovely (1997), which also starred John Travolta. That same year, she costarred with William Hurt and husband Sean in Erin Dignam's Loved. In 1998, she had a part in Hurlyburly, while in 1999, she portrayed Mrs. Bottom in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Theresa Osborne in Message in a Bottle.
Wright Penn then kept busy with roles in Unbreakable and How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog (both in 2000), The Last Castle and The Pledge (both in 2001), and as Starr in White Oleander (2002). For the 2003 feature Virgin, she starred as Mrs. Reynolds and also received her first executive producer credit.
That same year, she appeared as Nicola/Nina in The Singing Detective with Robert Downey Jr. In 2004, she played Clare in A Home at the End of the World, costarring Colin Farrell. 2005 found her playing Grace Roby in the television miniseries Empire Falls, and on the big screen in Nine Lives and Sorry, Haters. Robin's fans will be happy to hear that she has many big-screen projects coming up, well into 2007. |
