Parker Christian Posey was born on November 8, 1968, in Baltimore, Maryland. She and her fraternal twin, Chris, were born prematurely and their parents, Chris and Lynda Posey, didn't expect them to live. As a result, Parker was hastily named after 1950s model Suzy Parker. Parker's grandmother eventually gave her the nickname "Missy" when the family started worrying that Parker's unusual name would cause her to be picked on at school.
The Poseys moved to Laurel, Mississippi, where Parker was raised. By the time she was in high school, Parker was living in North Carolina and attending the North Carolina School of the Arts. She later went to State University of New York at Purchase College, where she studied drama and roomed with future ER star Sherry Stringfield.
Fresh out of college, Parker quickly established herself as an actress. She landed a role on the CBS soap As the World Turns in 1991 and 1992.
In 1993, Parker made her feature debut in Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused and appeared in five other films that year alone. Her roles were mostly small ones in independent films, with the exception of the forgettable studio film Coneheads. She also had a role in 1993's Sleepless in Seattle, but she ended up on the cutting room floor.
Among her 1994 highlights were Sleep with Me and Mixed Nuts, while in 1995, she had her first starring role in Party Girl, in addition to appearing in Kicking and Screaming and The Doom Generation.
In 1996, Parker acted in the acclaimed Basquiat, teamed with Linklater again for SubUrbia and appeared in Waiting for Guffman, the first of a series of films she would make with "mockumentary" director Christopher Guest.
The next year brought Parker added praise when she won the Special Recognition prize for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival for her portrayal of "Jackie-O" in The House of Yes. Parker then took on her most mainstream and high-profile role to date in 1998's You've Got Mail, in which she played Tom Hanks' demanding girlfriend.
After only five or six years in the industry, Parker already had over 30 projects to her credit and she's hardly slackened her pace in recent years.
She appeared in Scream 3 (2000), vamped it up in Josie and the Pussycats (2001), and reunited with Christopher Guest in Best in Show (2000) and A Mighty Wind (2003), for which she did all her own singing and mandolin playing.
In fact, throughout 2003, Parker and other A Mighty Wind cast members took their show on the road, playing fake folk music in character. Her most recent films include Laws of Attraction (2004) and Blade: Trinity (2004).
You'll see more of Parker in 2004 and 2005 films like Adam & Steve, The OH in Ohio and Asphalt Beach.
In addition to acting, Parker makes pottery in her spare time and is an accomplished mime. She is also a contributing editor for Open City, a New York literary magazine that is also edited by her former boyfriend, Thomas Beller.
Parker's other former beaus have included producer-director Bob Gosse, Zach Leary (son of LSD researcher Dr. Timothy Leary), and actor Stuart Townsend (Charlize Theron's current boyfriend), with whom she moved to London, England in the late 1990s. At last report, she was seeing musician Ryan Adams. |
