| One word: Tolkien. Back in 2002-2003, she made every man want to fetch his horse and rescue her from evil when she portrayed the captivating and heroic Eowyn in the mega-blockbuster films: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003). We will ever be grateful to Peter Jackson for casting Miranda as the Shieldmaiden of Rohan in Tolkien's epic tale. We'll also never forget how she sumptuously filled out her breast-plate and medieval armor as she headed to battle, bouncing up and down on her stallion all the way. |

| This accomplished Australian beauty turns heads wherever she goes. With her stunning Aussie good looks and a host of accomplishments as an actress in her native country, Miranda Otto gives us good reason to keep showing up at the theaters. Miranda Otto was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, on December 16, 1967. She was named after the character "Miranda" from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Her father, Barry Otto, is a famous Australian actor. Her mother, Lindsay, quit acting and began designing dresses after Miranda's birth.
Miranda took ballet lessons in her youth and began acting in her teens; she gave up pursuing a career in medicine in order to pursue acting. In 1990, she graduated from the renowned National Institute of Dramatic Art theatrical school in Sydney, Australia.
Miranda always looked younger than her age, and at 17, she was playing roles meant for 12-year-olds. Miranda made her big-screen debut at the age of 19 playing 14-year-old Emma Grange in the film Emma's War (1986). Subsequent small TV guest appearances in Australia gave her more notoriety. Over the next few years, she appeared in a string of well-received but low-profile Australian films, such as The 13th Floor (1988), The Girl Who Came Late (1991), The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992) and Sex Is a Four Letter Word (1995). Her work in the Australian film industry has earned her numerous Best Actress nominations by the Australian Film Institute.
It wasn't until 1998 that Miranda finally made waves in the U.S. with her role in the The Thin Red Line. Though small, her role alongside such bankable Hollywood stars as Sean Penn, Adrien Brody and George Clooney set her star on the rise. Her next big part came in the Robert Zemeckis thriller What Lies Beneath (2000); starring opposite Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer helped solidify her reputation in Hollywood.
She then went on to star in the notable films Human Nature (2001), Julie Walking Home (2002) and Doctor Sleep (2002). But she achieved her biggest success with her role as Eowyn in the last two Peter Jackson The Lord of the Rings films, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Miranda then starred in 2004's Flight of the Phoenix opposite Dennis Quaid and Giovanni Ribisi, and co-stars with Tom Cruise in the Steven Spielberg-directed sci-fi blockbuster, War of the Worlds, in summer of 2005.
In January 2003, Miranda married Australian actor Peter O'Brien, whom she met on the set of their play A Doll's House (2002) in Australia. She gave birth to their daughter, Darcey, on April 1, 2005.
Miranda loves to eat milk chocolate and scarf down hamburgers. Who wouldn't love a woman who can look like her and still pound down a good meal? They know how to make them in Australia. |
