| Though Mallika is a legend in her home country of India, the majority of North Americans are not at all familiar with her work. But with small yet pivotal roles in increasingly prominent films, it seems obvious that she’s on her way to being recognized all over the world. |
 |
| We can’t help but admire Mallika Sherawat’s dedication and perseverance, and there’s little doubt that her hard work is finally starting to pay off -- not many Bollywood actresses can say they’ve costarred alongside someone as world-renowned as Jackie Chan. |

Reema Lamba was born on October 24, 1981, in Rohtak, Haryana, India. Raised by conservative, old-fashioned parents, Mallika spent her childhood harboring secret dreams of someday making a living as a model and actress. Much to the opposition of her father who never made any secret of his disdain for his daughter’s lofty ambitions, Mallika left her small village as soon as she was able to and she made her way to India’s most populous city, Mumbai.
Having made the decision to pursue a career within the entertainment industry, Mallika abandoned her birth name of Reema Lamba (primarily because of the surfeit of actresses named Reema) and adopted her current moniker (Sherawat is her mother’s maiden name). As Mallika soon discovered, however, it’s a long, hard road from obscurity to fame and fortune. As such, the struggling performer took on a job as an air hostess and soon found herself falling for a pilot named Karan Singh Gill.
Although the two were married shortly after, their union didn’t last terribly long and Mallika was once again living the single life. Fortunately for Mallika, it was around that time that she finally managed to land an actual part on a movie: 2002’s Bollywood effort Jeena Sirf Merre Liye. Despite the smallness of the role, audiences and film producers began to take notice of Mallika’s beauty and natural talent.
Her big break came a year later with a fairly substantial role in the controversial Khwahish. Mallika caused quite a stir with her unabashedly sexual performance, in which she participated in a scandalous amount of on-screen kisses -- 17, to be exact. The film firmly established Mallika as a brassy, uninhibited actress who deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as fellow Bollywood queens such as Aishwarya Rai and Lisa Ray.
Mallika cemented her reputation as a Bollywood sexpot in 2004 with the release of Murder, which cast the actress as a married woman who embarks upon an illicit affair that leads to disastrous consequences. The film, essentially a remake of the 2002 Richard Gere and Diane Lane film Unfaithful, proved that Mallika had no qualms about showing plenty of skin on the big screen. After landing a nomination for Best Actress at India’s Zee Cine Awards, Mallika discovered that she now had the status and reputation to essentially write her own ticket.
Over the next two years, Mallika appeared in no less than five movies, including 2004’s Kis Kis Ki Kismet and 2005’s Bachke Rehna Re Baba. Her increasingly prominent stature brought her to the attention of Jackie Chan, who cast Mallika as an Indian Princess in his 2004 action epic The Myth. She caused something of a stir at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, when she arrived on the red carpet wearing an exceedingly skimpy outfit as part of her promotional duties for The Myth. |
