| Juliette Binoche has earned her fame through many fantastic performances in European TV and film. Even though the French had known about her acting talents since the early 1980s, Juliette's first big splash with American audiences was in the film The Unbearable Lightness of Being. She followed that up with roles in the critically acclaimed The English Patient (1996) and Chocolat (2000). |

| This beautiful and refined French actress has been making men swoon in two languages for much of her film career. A classy and elegant lady, Juliette Binoche (pronounced Bee-nosh) personifies grace, charm and the best of European sexiness. Even the exotic sound of her name makes us think of a delicious Parisian pastry. Can we have a little more of that Binoche, please? Oui, oui. |

Juliette Binoche was born on March 9, 1964, in Paris, France. Her mother, Monique Stalens, was an actress, and her father, Jean-Marie Binoche, a sculptor and theater director. Her sister, Marion Stalens, is a photographer and actress. Juliette's parents divorced when she was 4, and she spent her childhood alternating between both parents and then attending a Catholic boarding school.
When she turned 15, she began her acting studies at the National School of Dramatic Art in Paris. Juliette also worked as a cashier in a supermarket to make some extra money.
She dropped out of school in 1981 to become a stage actress for a brief time, performing in plays by Moliere, Ionesco and Pirandello. In 1983, she earned her first big-screen role in Liberty Belle. By 1985, she won rave reviews for her performance in Je Vous Salue, Marie (Hail Mary), about a teenage Virgin Mary.
Over the next few years, her popularity and career expanded. She appeared in numerous European productions, such as Rendez-vous (1985), Les Nanas (The Chicks, 1985) and Mauvais Sang (Bad Blood, 1986). In 1986 she also became romantically involved with French director Leos Carax, a union that lasted until 1991.
In 1988, she solidified her international acclaim by starring opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in the critical hit, The Unbearable Lightness of Being. In 1991, she was directed by Carax in the film Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (The Lovers on the Bridge).
She painted the promotional poster for this film (she is an avid painter) and also starred alongside her real-life sister, Marion Stalens. The following year, she appeared opposite Ralph Fiennes in Wuthering Heights and opposite Jeremy Irons in Louis Malle's Damage.
Rather than star in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (in the lead role), Juliette went on to star in the Krzysztof Kieslowski-directed trilogy, Trois couleurs: Bleu (1993), Trois couleurs: Blanc (1994) and Trois couleurs: Rouge (1994), which translates into Three Colors: Blue, White and Red.
In 1993, she was invited by French President Francois Mitterand to come dine with him in the hopes that she would be his mistress -- Juliette declined.
Juliette Binoche took 1994 off to spend time with her first child, Raphael, who was born in September 1993. The father is Andre Halle, a professional scuba diver.
She returned to acting in 1995 with the film Le Hussard Sur le Toit (The Horseman on the Roof). At the time, it was the most expensive film ever shot in France, at a budget of $35 million. During this period, Binoche was living with French actor Olivier Martinez (now with Kylie Minogue) and Empire magazine voted her No. 48 on its list of "100 Sexiest Stars in Film History."
Juliette Binoche wowed audiences with her work in the dramatic blockbuster The English Patient (1996), again opposite Ralph Fiennes. Her role as the Canadian nurse who treats Fiennes' character led her to a Best Supporting Actress Oscar win.
In 1997, she was on People magazine's annual list of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World." That year also marked the end of her relationship with Martinez.
But Juliette was keeping busy on the professional front, even though she turned down the role of Claire in 1996's blockbuster Mission: Impossible. She learned to play the violin for her role in Alice et Martin (1998). She also went back to her theater roots with a starring role in the play Naked (1998), at London's Almeida Theatre.
In 2000, Juliette had her second child, a daughter named Hannah, with French actor Benoit Magimel. She also starred in a trio of films, La Veuve de Saint-Pierre (The Widow of Saint-Pierre), Code Inconnu: Rcit Incomplet de Divers Voyages (Unknown Code: Incomplete Tales of Several Journeys) and opposite Johnny Depp in the critically acclaimed hit film, Chocolat. Juliette learned how to craft chocolate by going to a chocolate specialist, as part of her research for the role.
While promoting Chocolat in the U.S., Juliette was invited to the White House by President Bill Clinton. She was busy acting in the Broadway play Betrayal, for which she received a Tony award nomination, so the Clintons traveled to New York to meet her instead.
By 2002, Juliette was recognized as the highest-paid actress in French history.
She also appeared with French actor Jean Reno in the 2002 romantic comedy, Decalage Horaire (Jet Lag). In 2003, Juliette became the new face for an Italian fashion line called Gentryportofino.
Her next major vehicle was 2004's political drama In My Country, alongside Samuel L. Jackson.
Juliette Binoche is keeping busy in 2005 and 2006: her projects include Bee Season, with Richard Gere, Mary, with Matthew Modine and Forest Whitaker, Paris, Je T'aime, costarring Natalie Portman and Orlando Bloom, and Breaking and Entering, with Jude Law.
Outside of film, Juliette actively avoids the paparazzi to preserve her privacy. When she's not acting or painting, she enjoys reading the works of Carlos Castaneda and eating Nutella chocolate/hazelnut spread. |
