Goldie Jean Studlendgehawn was born on November 21, 1945, in Washington, DC, and raised in a predominately Jewish neighborhood in the suburbs of Maryland. She started taking dance lessons when she was 3, and managed a dance studio by the age of 17, while attending American University's drama department.
Goldie danced professionally at the Texas Pavilion of the 1964 New York World's Fair, which led to her being hired for the chorus lines of various musical theater productions over the next couple of years.
Hawn eventually relocated to California, and was cast as ditzy Sandy Kramer in Good Morning, World, a short-lived sitcom. While that show was soon canceled, she got a huge break when she was selected to be a dancer on the swinging '60s variety show, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, which debuted in January 1968. Hawn initially appeared on the show clad in nothing more than a bikini and body paint, covered with popular slogans of the era. She was given one-liners and quickly became one of the most popular stars of the series.
Hawn made her big screen debut in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968), a long-forgotten film whose main significance was that it served as the meeting place for Goldie and her future companion, Kurt Russell. She married Gus Trikonis in 1969, though the marriage would end in divorce seven years later.
Hawn's next film, the 1969 comedy Cactus Flower, won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and established her as a Hollywood starlet on the rise. She continued to demonstrate her comedic talents in a series of features including There's a Girl in My Soup, co-starring comic legend Peter Sellers (1970), $ (1971, a.k.a. The Heist) with Warren Beatty, Butterflies Are Free (1972), and The Girl from Petrovka (1974).
In 1974, Hawn demonstrated her dramatic side in Steven Spielberg's first theatrical feature, The Sugarland Express. She wowed the critics and public alike for her turn as one of Beatty's love interests in 1975's Shampoo, a big box-office hit for which she took home 7% of the gross.
She next appeared as a music hall dancer in the Western-comedy The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox (1976), before marrying musician Bill Hudson and temporarily retiring from moviemaking to have son Oliver in 1976.
In 1978, Hawn co-starred opposite Chevy Chase in his first post-SNL outing, Foul Play. The following year she had daughter Kate, and had to fight Hudson in court for parental custody of their two children following their 1979 divorce.
Hawn returned to the silver screen in top form for 1980's Private Benjamin, which became a huge hit at the box office, earned her a Best Actress Oscar and Golden Globe nod, and gave her a first-time executive producer credit.
Seems Like Old Times (1980) re-teamed her with Chase, while 1982's Best Friends co-starred Burt Reynolds. In 1984, she starred in a pair of comedies, Protocol and Swing Shift. While filming the latter, she and co-star Kurt Russell became an item, and their relationship has lasted until the present day. Their son Wyatt was born in 1986.
Hawn continued to work steadily through the '80s and '90s, appearing in Wildcats (1986), re-teaming with Russell in Overboard (1987), starring opposite Mel Gibson in Bird on a Wire (1990), and turning in a rare dramatic performance in the 1991 police story Deceived.
She co-starred in a couple of hit comedies in 1992, namely Death Becomes Her and HouseSitter, while the drama CrissCross failed to ignite the box office.
Hawn returned in 1996 to co-star with Diane Keaton and Bette Midler in the hit The First Wives Club, and got to show off her song and dance chops in the Woody Allen musical-comedy, Everyone Says I Love You.
She directed the made-for-TV movie Hope in 1997, and was the subject of Marc Shapiro's biography entitled Pure Goldie: The Life and Career of Goldie Hawn, published in 1998. She next appeared with Steve Martin in the 1999 remake of The Out-of-Towners.
Town and Country (2001) co-starred Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton, while 2002's The Banger Sisters teamed her with Susan Sarandon as two fiftysomething rock and roll groupies.
In 2003, Hawn founded Cosmic Entertainment along with Russell and children Kate and Oliver Hudson. In January 2004, the 58-year-old actress took on a new role as grandmother when daughter Kate gave birth to son Ryder Russell Robinson.
Hawn's currently writing a memoir, A Lotus Grows in the Mud: Footprints of a Spiritual Life, described as a "very personal, spiritual reflection on her life. |
