Biography
Glenn Close was born on March 19, 1947, in Greenwich, Connecticut. In 1960, her father, a doctor, began running a clinic in the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Glenn spent her teen years bouncing between Africa, a boarding school in Switzerland and a New England prep school. She graduated from the College of William and Mary with a bachelor's degree in drama and anthropology.

Close began her professional performing career in 1964, in the original production of the long-running Up With People stage show. She worked in regional theatrical productions before making her debut on Broadway in Love For Love in 1974. She continued to work in theater throughout the remainder of the '70s, in addition to appearing in the occasional made-for-TV movie, such as Too Far to Go (1979) and Orphan Train (1979).

In 1980, Close received a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Barnum. Oscar-winning director George Roy Hill spotted her in the show and offered Close her first feature film role in The World According To Garp (1982).

Her portrayal of Robin Williams' title character's activist mother earned her an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category. She received her second nod in the same category for her turn as yuppie Sarah in 1983's The Big Chill.

Her film work for 1984 included the dubbing of Andie MacDowell's dialogue in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, as well as roles in The Stone Boy and The Natural, which earned her a third Academy Award nomination. That same year, she also received her first Emmy nomination for her appearance in the TV movie Something About Amelia, and her first Tony Award for The Real Thing.

In 1985, Close co-starred with Jeff Bridges in Jagged Edge and tried her hand at comedy in the title role of Maxie. She earned her fourth Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress, for her terrifying portrayal of the now notorious bunny-boiler Alex Forrest in 1987's Fatal Attraction. Close gave birth to daughter Annie Maude Starke in 1987, thanks to her relationship with John Starke.

In 1988, she won critical praise for her performance in the telefilm Stones for Ibarra, and gave another of her memorable performances in the period drama Dangerous Liaisons, co-starring John Malkovich. As the Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil, Close won yet another Best Actress Oscar nomination for the latter but, as in the past, she failed to make it to the podium.

Close co-starred in Immediate Family and hosted Saturday Night Live in 1989. The following year, she portrayed Gertrude opposite Mel Gibson's Hamlet, and narrated and starred as Sunny Von Blow in Reversal of Fortune.

Close starred in and also served as executive producer for the 1991 made-for-TV movie Sarah, Plain and Tall. The film, which co-starred Christopher Walken, won critical acclaim, as well as a sizable audience. It spawned two sequels, Skylark (1992) and Sarah, Plain and Tall: Winter's End (1999).

1992 also marked Close's second hosting stint on Saturday Night Live, as well as her return to the Broadway stage in Death and the Maiden, which won her a second Tony Award. Next, she appeared on the big screen in 1993's The House of the Spirits and as the managing editor of the New York Sun in Ron Howard's The Paper (1994).

Close was selected by Andrew Lloyd Webber to take on the role of Norma Desmond in the Broadway musical version of Sunset Boulevard, for which she won a third Tony in 1995. She returned to the small screen for 1995's Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story. In addition to starring as Col. Cammermeyer, for which won her first Emmy as Outstanding Lead Actress, Close was also the film's executive producer.

In 1996, she appeared with Julia Roberts in Mary Reilly, as the First Lady in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks!, and as the fabulously ghoulish Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians.

Close closed out the decade playing U.S. vice-president Kathryn Bennett in Air Force One (1997), Camille in Robert Altman's dark comedy Cookie's Fortune (1998), and as the voice of Tarzan's mother Kala in the animated feature Tarzan (1999).

Close then reprised her role as Cruella in 102 Dalmatians (2000), co-starred in The Safety of Objects (2001), and provided the voice of the Blue Fairy in Roberto Benigni's production of Pinocchio (2002). She also reprised her role in A Streetcar Named Desire at London's Royal National Theatre in 2002.

In the past few years, Close has kept busy with appearances on the big screen, including in The Lion in Winter and Le Divorce in 2003, The Stepford Wives in 2004, and Nine Lives, Heights, The Chumscrubber, Paint and Therese Raquinin 2005.

She joined the cast of The Shield on cable's FX channel in March 2005, playing Captain Monica Rawling, a 25-year veteran of the police force.
