Fran Drescher
No one talks or laughs quite like Fran Drescher, and that's probably a good thing. Her trademark whiny chuckle and nasal voice allow her to be recognized no matter where she is (no visual needed). As a celebrity who tackles more than one aspect of the biz, Fran proves that it takes more than talent to make it happen.

Date of Birth: September 30, 1957
Birthplace: Flushing, Queens, New York

What makes her so famous?
Fran Drescher has been working as an actress since 1977, but it wasn't until 1993 that she made her big splash as the title character in CBS's The Nanny. Along with her acting skills, her career portfolio includes writing, producing and directing. With moderate success in films like 1997's The Beautician and the Beast (as executive producer), Drescher has returned to television, starring in and producing the WB's Living with Fran (2005).
Why we adore her..., as we do?
With Fran Drescher, beauty comes with age. Although she's been in the business for almost 30 years, we didn't really get to know her until the mid-'90s. Her film and television projects are just hitting a second phase now, and we're happy to watch it all unfold.
Biography
Francine Joy Drescher was born in Flushing, Queens, New York, on September 30, 1957, to Mort and Sylvia Drescher. Incidentally, Fran attended Hillcrest High School in New York with future television personality, Ray Romano. At age 15, Fran met Peter Marc Jacobson, a fellow student, and the two became an item. After starting out at Queens College, Fran went into cosmetology school, obtained her license and opened a small salon.

In 1977, Fran landed her first film role in Saturday Night Fever, with John Travolta. Although she had a small role, the hit film launched Fran's professional acting career. After her debut, Fran made small appearances in other films and television series, like Milos Forman's Ragtime (1981) and the TV hit Fame (1982). On a personal note, she married longtime boyfriend Peter Marc Jacobson in 1978.

While her acting career was on a high, there was a tragic low in her life: Fran and a girlfriend of hers were sexually assaulted when her apartment was broken into in 1985. After the crime was committed, Fran saw justice being served when her rapist was sent to prison.

Toward the end of 1985, Fran went back to work and made guest appearances on 227, Who's the Boss? and Night Court, and even starred in a series called Charmed Lives in 1986.

It wasn't until the 1993 debut of The Nanny that Fran Drescher received widespread television and film exposure. Her show, about the unlikely pairing of a cosmetic salesperson to a widowed Broadway producer with three children, became a huge hit for CBS.

The sitcom ran for six years, and costarred Charles Shaughnessy as love interest Maxwell Sheffield. In 1994, after the series' first season, Fran starred in the film adaptation of Car 54, Where Are You?, where she met one of her now closest friends, Rosie O'Donnell.

As The Nanny continued its run, Fran wrote her first book, Enter Whining (1996), in reference to her trademark voice. The book went on to become a New York Times bestseller.

In 1996, Fran was named one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" by People magazine and found herself working opposite Robin Williams in Jack. At the same time, however, she and her husband Peter separated.

In 1999, The Nanny came to an end. During its run, the series had been nominated for nearly 40 awards, including two Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations for Fran Drescher (in 1996 and 1997).

Also in 1999, Fran and Peter Marc Jacobson's marriage ended in divorce.

In June 2000, Fran was admitted to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Hospital after doctors diagnosed her with uterine cancer. After undergoing surgery to prevent the spread of the illness beyond Stage 1 complications, Fran was given a clean bill of health -- she did not even have to go through radiation or chemotherapy treatment.

Following her bout with the illness, Fran penned Cancer Schmancer (2002). Like her previous effort, the book went on to become a New York Times bestseller. In addition, the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation awarded her with its Public Service Award.

Although Fran and Peter share no children, she now owns a chocolate Pomeranian named Esther Drescher.

Fran continues to work on the WB's Living with Fran, which debuted in 2005, and can be seen in the horror/comedy Santa's Slay (2005).
