cheryl hines joins the groundlings
Following university, Hines headed out to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. There, she hooked up with the performers of The Groundlings, an improvisational comedy troupe. Lisa Kudrow, who would go on to co-star on Friends, was her first instructor at the theater. During her time with The Groundlings, Hines learned the crafts of improvisation and sketch writing, and she still occasionally performs with the group.
Hines' film and TV career got off to a slow start, with only a handful of small parts to her credit during the late '90s. In 1996, she appeared as Sheila in the short film Cheap Curry and Calculus, and played a nurse in a 1997 segment of the long-running Unsolved Mysteries TV series. The following year, she appeared in an episode of Suddenly Susan, and in the "Six Degrees of Marlon" episode of The Wayans Bros.
In 2000, Hines was cast as Cheryl David, wife to Larry David's hopeless character, on the ground-breaking HBO sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm. That same year, the actress reunited with her former improv mentor, Lisa Kudrow, on an episode of Friends, in which she received credit as Woman #2. While still a regular cast member of Curb Your Enthusiasm, she guested on the "Annoying Kid" episode of Everybody Loves Raymond in 2002.
On a personal note, she married Paul Young on December 30, 2002. Their daughter Catherine Rose Young was born in March 2004.
Hines kept busy with her HBO series and other TV-movie parts and guest-starring roles throughout 2003. In 2003, she played Peter Gallagher's wife in the telefilm A Tale of Two Wives, Dr. Linda in an episode of Wanda at Large, and the Trailer Park Lady in the "Terrorist Training" episode of Reno 911!.
In 2004, she voiced the role of Kate, the mother lion on NBC's CGI-animated sitcom Father of the Pride, and also made it onto the big screen playing Jennifer Aniston's overbearing boss in Along Came Polly.
Hines appeared in a number of feature films in 2005, including the Disney comedy Herbie Fully Loaded, starring Lindsay Lohan and Michael Keaton, the romantic comedy Cake with Heather Graham, the college comedy Bickford Shmeckler's Cool Ideas, and the drama Our Very Own with Allison Janney.
In 2006, she appeared in an episode of Scrubs, as well as on the big screen in Keeping Up with the Steins with Jami Gertz and Daryl Hannah, Waitress, starring Keri Russell, and R.V., co-starring Robin Williams and Jeff Daniels. She also became an executive producer of the Oxygen Network series Campus Ladies, and earned her first directing credit for the episode ”No Means No." |
