Mary Cathleen Collins was born on November 20, 1956 in Long Beach, California. The oldest of four children, Bo’s childhood was far from glamorous. Though Bo’s striking looks brought her compliments and lascivious stares, she never gave a second thought to pursuing a career within the entertainment industry. “As a teenager, I wasn't very ambitious and had no big plans,” she recalls. “I certainly never dreamed of going into films; my main interest was the beach and I assumed I'd end up working in a surf shop."
In fact, Bo first got into modeling in order to pay for a sleek new surfboard she had her eye on. But it wasn’t long before she was landing one gig after another, including a three-word role on a commercial for deodorant. Although she was making good money as a model/pitchwoman, Bo found that she had a genuine knack for performance. She subsequently found herself an agent and began the slow auditioning process.
It was at one such audition, at the age of 16, that Bo met a filmmaker named John Derek, who just happened to be 30 years her senior. The two hit it off immediately and began dating, but, because of Bo’s youth, the couple had to move to Germany to ensure that John wouldn’t be prosecuted for statutory rape. Once Bo turned 18, however, John proposed marriage and the pair were able to return to the States, where the would-be actress officially changed her name to Bo Derek and resumed her efforts to forge a career within the movie business.
Her hard work finally paid off in 1977, when she landed a fairly substantial role in the Jaws knock-off Orca opposite screen-legend Richard Harris. Although the film garnered mostly poor reviews and fared even worse at the box office, it did announce Bo’s arrival as a fresh new face in Hollywood, and the actress soon found herself being invited to audition for increasingly high-profile projects.
In 1979, Bo’s fledgling career was given a boost of astronomical proportions when she was cast opposite Dudley Moore in the sex comedy 10. Though it was only her second movie role, Bo left an indelible impression on critics and viewers alike and emerged from the film a bona fide star. The actress even sparked a nationwide fashion craze stemming from her unusual hairstyle: Cornrows became all the rage following the release of the film.
Unfortunately, Bo spent the next several years appearing in one flop after another, the majority of which were directed by her husband John (including the infamous 1984 bomb Bolero). Her status as a sex symbol only grew as the years progressed, however, and, in 1980, Bo appeared in the first of many Playboy spreads photographed by none other than John Derek.
After Bolero, Bo took a break from making movies, but she re-emerged in the early ‘90s with a string of disastrous efforts, leading even her most ardent fans to wonder if she was finally finished in Hollywood. But Bo’s fortunes changed in 1995 after she was cast opposite Chris Farley and David Spade in Tommy Boy, a film that introduced her to an entirely new generation. Unfortunately, along with her rebirth, she also spent the next few years caring for her ailing husband, who finally succumbed to heart problems in 1998.
Bo has recently found a niche for herself as a hot older woman, appearing in both TV shows, including 7th Heaven and Still Standing, and movies -- she had a pivotal role opposite Jamie Kennedy in 2003’s Malibu’s Most Wanted.
Bo has even bounced back in her romantic life, having embarked upon a serious relationship with fellow actor John Corbett (Northern Exposure, My Big Fat Greek Wedding) several years ago. In 2006, Bo worked with Morgan Fairchild on the nighttime soap called Fashion House. |
